Hear Mr. William O. Ojwang from WWF Kenya present the leading PES programme at Lake Naivasha in Kenya.
The Naivasha programme is a market-based scheme resulting from voluntary conservation efforts, which works to balance poverty reduction with watershed conservation. The main ecosystem service within the programme is improved water quality, which has great importance to the operations of local flower companies and hotels attracting tourists to the lake. These flower firms and hotels are able to financially incentivise more conservation agriculture practice upstream of the lake by more directed support to stakeholders such as small scale farmers.
